Spotlight on Rosacea

Rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-shuh) is a common but poorly understood disorder of the facial skin that is estimated to affect well over 16 million Americans -- and most of them don't know it.

In fact, while rosacea is becoming increasingly widespread as the baby boomer generation enters the most susceptible ages, a Gallup survey found that 78 percent of Americans have no knowledge of this condition, including how to recognize it and what to do about it.

Because of its red-faced, acne-like effects on personal appearance, it can cause significant psychological, social and occupational problems if left untreated.

While the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is no cure, medical help is available that can control the signs and symptoms of this potentially life-disruptive disorder. Any one of the following warning signs is a signal to see a dermatologist or other knowledgeable skin care professional for diagnosis and appropriate treatment before the signs and symptoms become increasingly severe:

  1. Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead.
  2. Small visible blood vessels on the face.
  3. Bumps or pimples on the face.
  4. Watery or irritated eyes.

If you have Rosacea, here are some tips to help you look and feel your best:

  1. Avoid irritants like rubbing alcohol, strong concentrations of witch hazel, stimulating fragrances like menthol, eucalyptus, and peppermint.
  2. Use products that are fragrance free, allergy tested, and hypoallergenic. These terms on a product label are a must for your delicate skin.
  3. Try a new product in a small area for at least 3 days before applying it to your whole face. Most people apply products to a quarter-sized area on their neck to minimize potential irritation.
  4. Wear sunscreen with titanium or zinc oxides every day - an SPF of 15 is the minimum.
  5. Avoid excessive heat, spicy foods, and alcohol- these are common triggers for a flare-up.
