There is a new fad in skin care these days. Everywhere you look there are advertisements touting yet another new organic or natural skin care line.

The FDA does not have an official, enforceable definition for "natural" or "organic" products, and any references to organic through the FDA are in direct relation to food, not cosmetics or skin care.

Additionally, there is no certification or regulation for using the term "natural." It can be very confusing for consumers to make a decision about the origin of these products. Here are the definitions for the term "organic" that our government uses. Incidentally, these standards are much stricter in Europe.

There are three levels of organic as defined by the USDA:

• 100% organic. Products containing 100% organically produced ingredients, not counting added water and salt.

• Organic. Products that are at least 95% organic.

• Made with organic ingredients. These products contain at least 70% organic ingredients. The organic seal cannot be used on these packages.

Organic farming is concerned with the chemicals that are used to help grow crops, prepare fields and control pests. Only natural and environmentally safe chemicals can be used, and composted material plays a large factor in the preparation of the field.

Organic. Dr. Hauschka incorporates organic with biodynamic farming methods. Biodynamic agriculture considers the farm to be a self-contained entity. There is a strong correlation between the crops, livestock, careful maintenance of the soil and recycling of nutrients in order to maintain an ongoing, pristine quality compost and astronomical sowing and planting calendar based on the phases of the moon.
