All Eyes On You
March 2009

An entire palette of exciting colors will be seen gracing the eyes this spring, giving the face a fun spark. However, some of the shades will also take on a bit of an edge. Philip Luque, makeup artist with Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics predicts "there's going to be the usual spring pastels and pretty, bright pinks, but they're being mixed in with a little darker, smokey eye, just slightly softer and cleaner for spring". Being TRUE co-founder and makeup artist Alphonse Wiebelt suggests "using a soft brush to apply a neutral tone a shade lighter than your natural skin tone to the entire eye for a base, then sweep bolder color across the upper lid and along the bottom lash line, blending the two for a seamless look."

Strong washes of color like aqua blue, plum or butter cream yellow can be worn around the eyes as long as you contour with neutrals. The neutrals can be toned - violet, brown, earthy greens - as long as they compliment the bright colors. Use the neutral colors to really highlight the bolder colors!

Along with the smokey eye, a certain twinkle has also crossed over into spring. Makeup artist Kevin Mendelson from Jane Iredale is still seeing shimmer and touches of sparkle in products - those looking to break into more bold hues with a touch of glitz this spring can turn to an old standard: gold. Mixing shimmer with gloss helps to reflect the light for a brighter complexion. Try a light dusting of gold on the eyelids for the daytime and use a heavier hand to play up the eyes at night.

Dazzling eyes can easily become boring without a beautiful frame of lashes so you really need a great mascara. Lashes are big and bold for spring; separated and pretty. Precise lashes that aren't spidery or goopy can frame the lashes beautifully and draw a lot of attention. A tip from Kevin Mendelson: "really black, beautiful lashes can detract attention from dark, under-eye circles and shadows". Colored mascaras are even popping up and they are great for complimenting eye colors. Mendelson advises" use bright wine colors for blue eyes, purple for green or hazel eyes, and blue mascara for brown eyes."

If you think creating a cohesive look with this season's bold colors seems to present a bit of a challenge there are a few tricks you can use to help any makeup look magnificent. One is balancing the face using opposite colors on different features such as blues and purples with yellows and oranges. For example, if you have a purplish lipstick, you can do gold gilding on the lashes or a sweep of golden glimmer on the lid, or if your eyes have lavender touches, you can use more of a warm-based coral on the lips. Yet another trick which gives your eyes an instant lift with any makeup is using a light or white highlighter on the inside corners of the eyes and like magic - your eyes are bigger and brighter!

Given the array of beautifully bold options for lids and lashes, there is certain to be a color to catch the eye of everyone this spring!
