When we take good care of our skin, we can rely less on cosmetics. But how about disguising the various small imperfections that we all have on our complexion? Learning how to use the right concealer for your particular skin type and concern can give you a flawless appearance- even if you don't want to apply cosmetics to your entire face.
Always apply your concealer to clean, moisturized skin. Make sure your skin feels soft and dewy to the touch- if you are too dry your products will drag across the skin unnaturally and they won't blend easily. For an extra soft finish, mix your concealer with a little bit of moisturizer or apply the concealer with a damp makeup sponge. You'll want to choose a concealer color that melts into your skin color so that it is not visible after blending. However you may opt for a slightly lighter shade under the eyes if you are masking darker skin.

Let's review some of the different types of concealers available.

  • If you have dry skin, try using a liquid concealer that applies with a wand. Once you apply it, blend out the edges with a small brush.
  • A cover stick is less messy than most concealers. It can be applied to larger areas that need coverage, for example a birthmark. Most brands will be creamy enough that you can blend with your fingertips or a brush.
  • A concealer cream typically comes in a small pot, compact or tube. This is usually the greatest amount of coverage and should be applied and blended with a brush or sponge. This versatile product can be used under the eyes, over acne, or even to cover a tattoo!
  • A pencil can allow for very precise application and is usually used to pinpoint a small concern like a pimple. You can apply the color with the tip of the pencil and then blend with a small brush. Don't use your finger tip because you will lift color back off.
