The Beauty Benefits of Green Tea

The benefits of green tea have been reported for centuries. Originating in China, green tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Similar to black and oolong tea, green tea leaves are not fermented before steaming and drying; they remain fresh, which explains their green coloring. Although green tea has been popular in Asia for centuries, its popularity has recently become more widespread in the Western world, where black tea traditionally has been the tea of choice. Ceremonies, celebrations, relaxation time and ordinary meals usually consist of tea in most parts of the world, except the United States, where coffee is generally the more popular beverage.

Unlike black tea (also Camellia sinensis) which is produced by oxidizing the young tea leaves, green tea is produced from steaming fresh leaves at high temperatures, thereby deactivating the oxidizing enzymes and leaving the polyphenol content intact. Green tea only has about 25% of the caffeine content of coffee, and is credited with a variety of health benefits. Green tea is loaded with polyphenols-noted free-radical fighters-including epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC) in particular-which has been linked to skin cell rejuvenation.

The polyphenols in green tea are known as catechins, which are antioxidants by nature. One of the main catechins in green tea appears to be an effective agent against skin inflammation and cancerous skin changes, and these benefits have not been ignored by the spa industry. In skin care products, the inclusion of green tea can elicit a variety of responses, ranging from anti-inflammatory to skin rejuvenation benefits. Green tea is an antioxidant and is used in promoting cardiovascular health and reducing serum cholesterol levels in laboratory animals and humans. Studies suggest that green tea contains dietary factors that help decrease the development of some infectious diseases and dental caries. Green tea has diuretic, stimulant, astringent, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic, thermogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea has also been reported to enhance immunity.
