At the 2020 Skincare Spa, we're always getting questions about how to avoid or treat razor burn. Razor burn, technically known as pseudofolliculitis, is the irritation and bumps that occur with hair removal. This irritation can occur on the face or body and plagues both women and men alike. Because shaving has been a budget friendly, easy method of temporary hair removal for decades, we want to offer some tips that can keep your skin smooth and bump free.
- Never shave dry skin.
- Change your razors frequently. MOST irritation is caused by dull and dirty razors.
- Never share your razor.
- Rinse your blade frequently - ideally after every other stroke.
- Exfoliate away any rough, dead skin before shaving. Keep a gentle scrub in the shower and use it twice a week or try a lotion with glycolic acid in it.
- After shaving, apply lotion to soothe and hydrate the skin. Keep SPF on freshly shaved skin to avoid problems with sensitivity to sun exposure.
- Avoid any alcohol based skincare products- they are drying and irritating.
- Mild irritation can be soothed by applying hydrocortisone cream. Don't apply for more than 1 consecutive week- it can thin the skin over extended periods of time.
- If shaving is too harsh for your skin, consider waxing or laser treatments.
