8 Ways to Age Proof Your Makeup

Are in a beauty rut? It can be easy to apply your makeup the same way year after year - after all, you get out of the house faster that way! With a little careful thought, you can update your makeup to keep up with current trends without compromising your own personal style. What worked well for you in your 20s and 30s may not be as flattering in your 40s and 50s. Here are some suggestions to keep you looking fresh and youthful.

  1. If your complexion is getting dull, it's time to exfoliate more often and apply moisturizer regularly. One of our favorite gentle exfoliants works on every skin type and Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant can be used regularly. The beginning of great makeup is great skincare!
  2. If your foundation is settling in fine lines, look for a primer that contains some silicone or dimethicone. This allows the foundation to float on top of the skin, rather than move with facial expression. We like Youngblood Liquid Mineral Primer to achieve a smooth glow.
  3. Are you bothered by darkness around the eyes? Apply your foundation first and THEN apply your concealer to get maximum coverage. A light diffusing pen from Jane Iredale Active Light collection won't settle around the eyes and keeps skin looking bright. If you are bothered by eye shadow moving on the lid, then TRUE Protective Shadow Primer will keep your eyes flawless (and it brightens the eye- even if you don't want to wear shadow over it!).
  4. Is your eyeliner looking a little messy? For a change of pace, use a softer kohl pencil or wet the tip of a pointed brush and dip it into your favorite shade of eye shadow. Youngblood has several shades that can work well as a shadow or a liner (like Heather Smoke or Irish Moss). Keep the line as close to your lashes as possible- it the line gets too thick, it can make the eye appear smaller. A thin line makes the eye look brighter and more defined.
  5. Support your arch- if your brows are getting a little thinner with age, use a powder to fill them in. If you have darker hair, choose a powder that is one shade lighter than your hair and if you have blonde or silver hair, choose a shade that is darker for added definition. The brow kits from TRUE make this application easy and your results amazing yet subtle. (The secret is in the colored wax!)
  6. Does your blush leave streaks? Opt for a cream blush that blends into the skin and adds moisture. Look for soft, natural shades like pink and peach. Jane Iredale In-Touch Cream Blush smells yummy and looks radiant on the skin. You will truly glow from within!
  7. Lipstick feathering outside of your natural shape? Most of us will line our lips, but this can lead to a dark ring around the edge of your lip. Instead, line the outer edge of your lips with a nude shade and fill in over the entire lip before applying lipstick or lipgloss. You will get staying power without feathering!
  8. Worried that your lipstick shade is aging you? We recommend avoiding dark shades that can look harsh and severe. To look fresh and youthful, apply shades like light berry and nude rose. A finish that is glossy or satiny will be very flattering- avoid a dry, matte finish. Glominerals gloGLoss gives the perfect amount of pigment without making your lips feel sticky.
