Whether your acne has been gone for a week, a month or many years, the unsightly scars acne leaves behind can be just as bad as the acne breakouts themselves. Depending on the severity
and type of acne, the 'footprints' they leave behind can fluctuate from mild to severe discoloration of the skin.
Depending on the ethnicity of the individual, discoloration can vary. African American, Hispanic and Middle Eastern skins typically suffer with post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is characterized by brown or black discoloration at the site of the acne lesion. Caucasian and other fair skin types typically have post inflammatory erythema which is characterized by pink and purple spots or patches at the site of the acne lesion. Also there can be post inflammatory hypopigmentaion which are white marks, or lack or pigmentation at the site of the healed acne.
So why are the acne scars still there long after the acne breakout has gone?
With acne comes inflammation within the skin which travels very deep into the dermal layers of the skin and can last for several months or years. When the skin is inflamed, it produces tyrosinase which in turn stimulates the production of melanin. Depending on the color of the skin and the length of time the skin is deeply inflamed, different colors of melanin are produced leaving brown, black, red or purple discoloration.
Treatment:
The best route in treating these discolored 'scars' is to fade them by applying topical Hydroquinone, Retinols (Vitamin A), and Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Acids such as Glycolic, Lactic and or Salicylic acids. A combination of these ingredients will gently exfoliate layers of discolored skin while regulating melanin production for a more even-toned complexion.
Murad Post Acne Spot Lightening Gel is one of the most popular here at 2020 Skincare and is very effective. This Post Acne Spot Lightening gel combines Hydroquinone and Glycolic Acid to fade acne scars over time.
DDF Intensive Holistic Lightener uses Albatin, Extracts of Bearberry, Licorice and Mulberry to suppress melanin production while Glycolic Acid exfoliates to minimize hyperpigmentation.
Janssen White Secrets is an intensive treatment to be used every night for six weeks. Janssen utilizes a combination of Arbutin, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Bearberry, Licorice and Mulberry Extracts to fade existing pigmentation while inhibiting the tyrosinase which is the activator for melanin production.
